Laser skin resurfacing is a treatment used to reduce facial wrinkles and treat various skin conditions, such as acne, scars, warts, and enlarged glands on the nose. The process vaporizes the upper layers of skin, creating a wound that encourages the body to produce new collagen. As the skin heals, it tightens and eliminates wrinkles.
Laser skin resurfacing is ideal for individuals with fine lines or wrinkles around the mouth or eyes, as well as shallow scars (e.g., acne scars). It is also beneficial for skin that is nonresponsive after a facelift.
During treatment, a laser beam directs short, concentrated pulses of light at the treatment area. These pulses remove the skin layer by layer until the problem area has been vaporized.
Potential risks include burns from the laser’s heat, scarring, changes in pigmentation (especially on darker skin), bacterial infection, and reactivation of dormant herpes cold sores. During healing, small white bumps called milia may develop and may need to be treated by a doctor.
Your skin will continue to rejuvenate for several months after the procedure, with improvements visible over the following four months. The lines and wrinkles removed will be gone, but as aging continues, new wrinkles may form, requiring further treatment.
